EN: The article examines the carbon footprint of electric vehicles within their life cycle in Ukraine, taking into account
the national energy system, transport infrastructure, and geopolitical challenges arising from the ongoing war. It
explores how dependence on fossil fuels, an aging vehicle fleet with an average age of 19 years, and insufficient
charging infrastructure limit the ecological efficiency of electric vehicles in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Based on data reflecting electric vehicle market growth, with 12,100 units sold in September 2025, and the National
Energy and Climate Plan’s goal of achieving 14% renewable energy sources in transport by 2030, the study develops
decarbonization strategies tailored to Ukraine’s unique conditions to attain climate neutrality by 2050. The research
underscores the urgent need for substantial investments in charging infrastructure and renewable energy sources
to enhance the environmental benefits of electric vehicles in the transport sector. Life cycle assessment reveals
that, despite higher emissions during production due to energy-intensive battery manufacturing, electric vehicles
significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to internal combustion engine vehicles when powered
by cleaner energy sources. Ukraine’s energy sector, heavily reliant on natural gas (29%) and coal (24% in 2023),
reduces electric vehicle efficiency during operation. The war has led to infrastructure destruction and increased
military emissions, while temporarily lowering industrial emissions by 30%. Post-war recovery must prioritize green
transition strategies to prevent a projected 4.3-fold rise in transport emissions. Recommended measures include
enforcing stricter CO₂ emission standards for vehicles, reforming taxation to target emissions, electrifying railways
and public transport, and promoting alternative fuels to align with the Paris Agreement and European Union climate
objectives, ensuring sustainable development of Ukraine’s transport sector and contributing to long-term energy
security and economic resilience.
